Frequently Asked Questions About Mini Dental Implants
How Long Do Mini Implants Last?
Mini implants will last as long as you take care of them!
Just like with your natural teeth, of you chew on ice, hard foods, clench at night and don't wear a nightguard, you'll put undue pressure on the implants. A lot of people don't know this, but to take out a tooth you actually push on the tooth first to start detaching it from the tissues and then you pull it. By eating hard foods and clenching, you're loosening your natural teeth. The same can happen to your implant.
Minis are like your natural teeth in that your health will affect their survival. For example, if you have uncontrolled diabetes, or you smoke, that will limit blood flow to your teeth or the bone around your teeth. That will lead to the loss of teeth as that bone becomes brittle, etc. Likewise, limiting the blood flow to the bone around your mini implant will affect the longevity of that implant. So you should not smoke. If you have diabetes, make sure it is controlled. This is not only for your implants, but your overall health.
Is it True That Mini Implants Don't Last as Long as Conventional Implants Because They Are Smaller?
False! Studies have shown that success rates between mini and conventional implants are equal.
Just Mini Implants are usually between 2.0 and 3.0 mm in diameter. Due to this size, 99% of cases involving minis let us place them in the existing bone without the need for bone grafting. Since mini implants are smaller, we can place more of them and distribute the forces among more implants than you would otherwise be able to with conventional implants. For example, when we place a roundhouse we use anywhere from 6 to 12 implants depending on your bone and other factors. That allows us to distribute the forces of the bridge more naturally among a greater number of implants. This is comparable to the root structure of your natural teeth.
Can I Eat Whatever I Want With a Mini Implant?
Yes, you can! However, if you want your implants to last, you should be cautious of foods that may loosen them.
Minis are like your natural teeth. If you intend on chewing hard candy, nuts, ice, pork rinds, and other really hard foods, you WILL loosen your natural teeth and/or your implants. You have to take care of your implants just like you do your natural teeth.
Do I Need to Clean My Implants?
Minis Just like your natural teeth, implants can build up with plaque and various food debris. This needs to be cleaned. We suggest a professional implant maintenance cleaning at our office every 3-4 months. At home, daily, you should be brushing and practicing good oral hygiene care as if you were taking care of your natural teeth.
